Florida Sun Printing requires press ready files. We are always happy to do a quick review of your file at least 5 days prior to your press date and will report any issues we find. Failure to deliver press ready files may delay your press date and you may incur additional fees.


How to submit a press ready pdf:

  1. CMYK must be used. NO RGB, Spot, Lab color.
  2. 100% black text only. No four color black or RGB black text.
  3. Pages must be single pages. Inside spread may be an exception.
  4. Art/text should be within the safe image area only, unless bleeding.
  5. Safe image area for a magazine is .375" from all 4 page edges.
  6. Safe image area for a tabloid is .375" from R/L side of page edge. .5" from top and bottom page edge.
  7. Bleeds should be pulled .25" past page edge.
  8. Turn OFF crop or printer registration marks.
  9. Photos/artwork should be 300 dpi. 200 dpi is acceptable.
  10. All art on B/W pages should be converted to grayscale.
  11. Install and use the correct color profile.
  12. Choose PDF/X-1a:2001 when exporting your hi res pdf.


  13. **ALWAYS PREVIEW YOUR PDF FILES PRIOR TO SUBMITTING YOUR JOB.**

USE THE CORRECT COLOR PROFILE:

Download and install the correct color profile we recommended to you to achieve the best print quality for your paper type. These profiles will keep your paper cleaner with less smudging or smearing of the ink.

INSTALL FLORIDA SUN PRINTING COLOR PROFILES ON YOUR COMPUTER

WINDOWS, right-click a profile and select Install Profile. You can also add these thru Color Management.

MAC, copy profiles into the Hard Drive/Library/ColorSync/Profiles folder or Go (Hold down option key)/Library/ColorSync/Profiles folder. After installing color profiles, be sure to restart Adobe applications.


LOAD INTO PHOTOSHOP

Go to ‘Edit’, ‘Color Settings’. In the ‘Working Space’ section, choose the CMYK pull down menu and then choose the new profile. Just below this area in the ‘Color Management Policies’, make sure that the CMYK setting is ‘Convert to working CMYK’. To save your images/artwork with this profile you: Change the image from RGB to CMYK and it will save automatically with the new profile. or If it is CMYK, change it to RGB then back to CMYK and it will save automatically with the new profile. or Go to Edit > Convert to Profile > Choose the profile sent to you and preloaded under Destination Space.

LOAD INTO INDESIGN

Go to ‘Edit’, then ‘Color Settings’. In the ‘Working Spaces’ section, in the pull down menu next to CMYK. You should see the name of the new profile in the list and then choose it. In the "Color Management Policies" section, in the pull down menu next to CMYK - Choose Convert to Working Space.


LOAD INTO QUARK

Edit > Color Set Ups > Output > Click New. In the Edit Output Setup dialog, name your Setup. Under Output Options for Model: Choose CMYK, for Profile: choose either SNAP or SWOP (whichever profile your job requires). Check convert spot inks to process. Click OK in the Edit OutPut Setup window. Click Save in the Default Output Setups window.

INDESIGN

1. INDESIGN- EXPORT TO PDF - WILL CONVERT RGB TO CMYK:
1. Go to File > Adobe PDF Presets > High Quality Print > Save your pdf
2. Standard pull down choose PDF/X-1a:2001
3. General window “Uncheck Optimize for Fast Web View”.
4. Output window > Color Conversion pull down choose “Convert to Destination (preserve numbers)”
5. Destination pull down choose - (here choose the correct color profile SNAP2007 or SWOP2006_Coated3v2 that Florida Sun Printing has previously provided you).
6. Hit Export.
PLEASE NOTE: If your pages have BLEED then open the Marks and Bleeds tab and set the bleeds accordingly.

2. INDESIGN - EXPORT A COLOR PAGE TO GRAYSCALE PDF PAGE FROM YOUR DOCUMENT: You can let InDesign or Acrobat Professional convert color to grayscale for you however we recommend converting your images/art in Photoshop and using 100% black text for all grayscale pages. We can convert your color pages for you however there will be an additional prepress fee.

3. INDESIGN - TO CHECK IF RGB IMAGES ARE IN THE DOCUMENT: Go to Window > Links > Click the menu on the right > Go to “Panel Options” > Check “Color Space” and “ICC Profiles” under show column then click OK. This will add the two columns into your Links panel. You can then see the linked RGB images/art in your document and you can also see the icc color profile that images uses. You can then take the steps needed to convert each image to CMYK (preferred) OR you can choose to export your pdf using the settings in section #3 (acceptable).

4. INDESIGN- TO CHECK IF THERE IS FOUR COLOR BLACK TYPE IN THE DOCUMENT: Always use or create a 100% Black. NEVER use registration Black. Go to Window > Output > Separations Preview > Choose Separations in the View pull down > Uncheck Black to see all colors EXCEPT Black. If your text has cyan, magenta or yellow in it your text will still show. If your text is 100% black your text will disappear.

5. INDESIGN - DESIGNING AND EXPORTING SPREADS (doubletruck):
Export your pages as two files. One file will contain the spread pages (doubletruck)and one file will contain all other pages. In your PDF export, on the general tab, you will see a page range.
Enter the page numbers of the spread and choose the Spreads radio button.

QUARK

1. QUARK - “EXPORT TO PDF” AND WILL CONVERT RGB TO CMYK:
1. File > Export > Layout as PDF
2. At the bottom of the window in “PDF Style” pull down choose Press - High Quality/High Resolution
3. Under that click on OPTIONS.
4. Next to Verification: choose PDF/x-1a: 2001.
5. In the COLOR tab, next to setup: choose the color profile you designated when you set up your output settings. “SNAP2007” (for Newsprint-Uncoated Stock) or “SWOP” (for Glossy - Coated Stock)
6. In the registration marks window under Mode pull down choose Off
7. Click OK
8. Choose a destination to save your pdf to > Click save.
PLEASE NOTE: If your pages have BLEED then in the bleed window under the bleed type set the bleeds accordingly.
